“Sophie?” I yelled into the darkness, my voice echoing until it faded into a faint sound. An eerie feeling washed over me, telling me that I was alone.
I reached out into the void, feeling around for something tangible. My last hope of finding something solid comes to fruition as a sliver of light breaks through the abyss. While my eyes are adjusting to the lights faint glow, I notice shelves on either side of me with books, trinkets, and objects I had never seen before.
The statuettes, colorful vials, and vases full of dead flowers gave a sense that someone had once lived in this void. Each of the countless books with faded lettering on the spine felt ancient as I stroked my fingers across them. I looked from one bookshelf to the other, noticing there wasn’t a trend to the madness. Some were full, while others were empty.
My hands tingled as the light grew brighter the closer I walked toward it. I gathered the courage to explore further down the dimly lit hallway, with my eyes still adjusting to the glow. I came to the end where an old wooden chest with a domed lid sat with its lid barely ajar. The golden lock, worn leather handles, and damaged lid remind me of something from a story I had once read.
Coldness washed over me making my hair stand on end and causing shivers to shoot down my spine. There wasn’t a breeze and I was alone. With each step I took, my shoes echoed in the corridor. My heart raced knowing Sophie was nowhere to be found. Nothing at this point could ease my fear of being alone.
“I-is anyone there?” I call out again, hoping to be heard. I crouched in front of the trunk, my hand vibrating at the thought of touching the lid. My fingertips tingled, going numb when I lifted it to peer inside. Bells rang out as I was blinded by the bright light.

I can’t wait for the rest of the story
